Misguided Forest Fire Legislation Still a Threat

Deadline: November 14, 2003
U.S. activists, urge Congress to oppose forest fire legislation that would waive environmental laws, open 20 million acres of our national forests to logging, and harm habitat for wolves, bears, elk, and countless other creatures. Increase your impact: add your own thoughts to your message by taking action via "Your Personal Action Center." But, let us send your message; there isn't time to mail it.

A Cause For Paws is a 100% volunteer, non-profit organization. We rescue our animals from the streets of New York City and from local kill shelters. We have no shelter of our own, so we foster and board all of our animals until we can find them loving homes. Our goal is to educate the public about the benefits of spaying and neutering, create awareness about the consequences of breeding and buying and continue to save the many lives of homeless animals.

Cause for Paws has been asked to participate in the Gay Life Expo on Novemeber 15th at the Javitz Center. Streetproject will be administering the adoption table from 12pm - 5pm.
Depending on the amount of animals, we would most likely need 4 - 6 volunteers.

Uncaged Campaigns issued the following statement on 10 September 2003:

Home Office forced to apologise over complaints about 'spin'
The Home Office has been forced to apologise for ignoring formal complaints that it had misled members of the public over its role in controversial animal experiments.

The complaints followed a historic legal victory this April for Sheffield-based campaigners Uncaged. The anti-vivisection group won the right to publish leaked confidential documents after successfully arguing that the Home Office had deliberately failed to enforce animal welfare regulations and had a collusive relationship with animal researchers. Chinese to dine on zoo animals

News reports from China have alleged that 100 Bengal tigers and 2,000 Siam alligators have been sent from Thailand to China to a zoo where visitors will be able to eat the animals.

The zoo 'Sanya Love World' is due to open this year and people will be able to have their photos taken alongside big cats and watch elephant shows and pig races. An official for the company running the theme park said people would be able to eat alligator meat. Although the tigers are allegedly being sent to China for a 'conservation' programme where they would be introduced to a nature reserve, one official is reported as saying that once they have bred more tigers "tourists are likely to eat tiger meat". The 'nature reserve' has not yet been created. To read on...Collapse )

Ducks Out of Water

Viva! has launched a major investigation into duck farming. We have visited almost all the major duck producers in Britain. Recently in one unit, we saw thousands of adorable, yellow fluffy ducklings but without their mothers to protect them, to teach them how to swim, what to eat, how to preen. In these places no one cares. These birds are to be killed for the growing market in duck meat and, like every other ‘new meat’, it is hailed as the healthy choice. But is it? To read on...Collapse )

In God’s Name - Ritual Slaughter in the UK

In Britain today, millions of farmed animals face having their throats cut while fully conscious – and it’s perfectly legal. The law states that animals must be stunned before they are killed in the abattoir but animals which are killed by Jewish and Moslem religious slaughter are exempt from that rule. Scientific evidence shows that these animals face severe pain and distress. The Government’s own advisory body, the Farm Animal Welfare Council, has recently called for the banning of religious slaughter. Viva! has opposed ritual slaughter for many years. Procter & Gamble announced on June 30, 1999 that it had revised its animal testing policy. P&G stated that it will end the use of animal tests for all its currently-marketed non-food, non-drug products. This announcement covers color cosmetics, shampoos and hairstyling products, skin care products, tissue and towel products, laundry and dishwashing detergents, and household cleaners. The policy was effective immediately in all countries where the company operates. This indicates that P&G realizes how important the animal testing issue is and it's great news, because it means we are that much closer to realizing a complete victory! To read on...Collapse )
